鋼結構加層改造研究在我國很早就有了，比房屋加層改造起步還早。建筑結構改造、加固以及鋼結構工程的發(fā)展迅速，為了更好的完成舊建筑物的加層和改造工作。我國先后成立了許多房屋加層改造技術的學術團體，使鋼材結構加固改造這一團體學術團體內學術氣氛濃郁，創(chuàng)造了經驗探討的交流環(huán)境，推動這鋼結構加層改造的發(fā)展。

鋼結構加層改造也稱為外套框架加層結構，在加層層數(shù)比較多或者是不太方便在原結構上直接加層的建筑物時可以運用鋼結構加層改造。外套框架加層架構分為分離式和整體式兩個大類，分離式結構加層時可以和之前的舊房結構完全脫開；整體式結構加層則是在舊房結構的基礎上進行加層改造，連成整體。
